Off-Trail Taiwan: The Outdoor Adventure Guide

Taiwan has 3,000m alpine & forest hikes, wild hot springs, ancient river gorges, world-class surfing & windsurfing, stellar cycling, rock-climbing and more - all in an island half the size of Scotland.

The night markets are wonderful. But Taiwan's outdoor scene is what genuinely stunned me - punching well above its weight class and with something for everyone.

    Who am I?

Hi! I'm Jamie. I moved to Taiwan from the UK to protect & research their moon bears, leopard cats & other amazing wildlife.

I've led & supported mountain expeditions across the country, worked with & learnt from Taiwan's diverse indigenous peoples and spent a lot of time in Taiwan's great outdoors. In my spare time, I love to enjoy even more time outside - surfing, hiking, river-tracing and even learning to scuba dive in Mandarin.

Together with my friends, we can show you how amazing Taiwan is for outdoor activities, for all levels.

    What's inside?

    • River tracing - Taiwan's most extraordinary outdoor activity, almost unknown outside the country. You ascend rivers through gorgeous gorges, walking, scrambling, swimming and even climbing. Nothing else like it
    • Wild hot springs - off the tourist map, often reached only on foot, sitting in mountain rivers running warm. Coordinates and access notes included.
    • Hiking -from Jade Mountain (Northeast Asia's highest peak) to routes seeing almost no foreign visitors
    • Surfing and windsurfing - top spots around the country
    • Snorkelling, scuba & freediving - where to go, who to go with, what you'll see
    • Cycling - great day routes and recommendations for circling the island
    • Bouldering, Rock & Tree Climbing - the full picture, by region
    • Camping & glamping - from comfortable getaways to hardcore adventures
    • English language logistics throughout - because most of this information exists only in Mandarin
